The SEA-Teacher Programme gave me the opportunity to experience teaching and cultural immersion in Bengkulu, Indonesia as a pre-service teacher. Through this exchange, I was able to learn from different classroom environments, connect with students and educators, and grow both personally and professionally. This page provides an overview of the programme and the experiences that made it a meaningful part of my journey in education.

All About the Programme

The SEAMEO SEA-Teacher Programme is a student exchange initiative organized by the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) through the SEAMEO Secretariat. The program is designed for pre-service teachers from participating universities across Southeast Asia, providing them with opportunities to gain international teaching experience and cultural immersion in neighboring countries.

The programme aims to strengthen educational collaboration among Southeast Asian nations while helping future educators develop professional skills, intercultural understanding, adaptability, and global perspectives. Through this exchange, participants are assigned to host universities and practicum schools where they engage in classroom observation, teaching assistance, lesson implementation, and other school-related activities. In addition to teaching practice, participants are also introduced to the local culture, traditions, language, and educational system of the host country.

The SEA-Teacher Programme generally consists of several components, including:

  • Orientation activities at the host university

  • Classroom observation and teaching practice

  • Cultural exchange and community immersion

  • School visits and educational activities

  • Reflection and evaluation sessions

Since its establishment, the programme has involved numerous universities and thousands of pre-service teachers from countries across Southeast Asia, promoting regional cooperation and mutual understanding through education. It serves not only as an academic exchange, but also as a platform for building connections, sharing teaching practices, and encouraging collaboration among future educators in the region.

By participating in the SEA-Teacher Programme, pre-service teachers are given the opportunity to experience education beyond their own country’s context, helping them become more flexible, culturally aware, and globally minded educators.
